For Jasmine 🤍

White acrylic paint, Drawing block paper, Staple, Craft glue and Dental floss

By Joy Xie-Halperin | Multidisciplinary Artist and Avid Shelter Volunteer

(@chalkboardartiste | @tattooswithjoy)

Artwork Valuation: $500

My name is Joy (for short) and my work celebrates my love for catharsis via self-expression. I find a lot of relief painting pets and tattooing women. There’s something so amazing about then giving back to society via volunteering after discussing ideas and narratives with my clients. Somehow, everything comes back altogether and everyone heals together. I’ve found so much gratitude and momentum freelancing and helping shelter dogs. May everyone be so lucky to experience the love life can give back like I do!

I reserved my late sister’s birthday on 20 May to adorn my Barbie. The black Barbie was chosen because I felt an immediate affinity toward it—growing up half Thai, I was often mocked for my deeper skin tone in a predominantly Chinese family. I also saw great potential for contrast with whatever concept I chose. Eventually, I decided to keep my theme as unpretentious and sustainable as possible, reflecting my upbringing in poverty. Notions of purity and love guided my final decision to display the Barbie exclusively in white.
