By 2030, an estimated 83,000 elderly will be living alone. According to an NUS study in 2004, these seniors living alone will be twice more likely to develop depressive symptoms than their peers. Such feelings of loneliness have the potential to shorten life spans and cause them to socially withdraw from social activities out of shame.

At KampungKakis, our mission is to serve our seniors by giving them a life with meaning and companionship. We are a neighbourhood buddy system that matches these seniors to our volunteers in their local community who can converse with them in their preferred language.

Fundamentally, befriending is central to what we do. For some, meeting our volunteers might be their only social interaction for the week, which is why we want every interaction to count and to mean something in building an enduring friendship.

To make this happen, we have three initiatives to reach out to our seniors on the ground.

Medical Escorts

In August 2022, we piloted our medical escort programme to support close to 100 seniors who need accompaniment to their medical appointments. We recruit, train and compensate our volunteers to make this happen.

Grocery Provisions

Since the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, we distribute groceries and essential items to our seniors and low-income families in residential areas. In the future, we hope to expand our reach nationwide, namely to the Ang Mo Kio, Toa Payoh and Jurong West areas.

Digital Literacy

Our seniors struggle with navigating technology and smartphones and the pandemic has only widened the learning gap. As such, we hold regular digital literacy workshops in the Jurong area for seniors to practise using technology in a supportive environment!
